Who’d of thought our Liz would be on the throne for 60 years? The powerful lady has been leading our country for the majority of her life so it would be rude not to dress up for the her diamond jubilee right?

If the thought of patriotic dressing has caused immediate flashbacks of Geri Halliwells union jack dress, you’re in luck. The spicy ginger, who first rocked the ensemble circa ’97, has recently released a slightly less revealing version of the iconic dress at Next for £199. If you don’t have the budget of a royal yourself, not to worry; I have prowled the high streets and designer boutiques for outfits fit for a queen! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Ice Cream With Sparkles Please!

Spring has finally sprung (sort of) and SS12 is all about pastel shades. It’s not enough to simply stuff our faces with ice cream; we must wear it too. This flattering shade works best on pale and olive skinned beauties. For darker skin tones I suggest a more vivid colour scheme as your skin can take it without looking washed out. Skater dresses have fast become my favourite shape. Thank you Dancing on Ice for bringing this flattering hemline to our attention. The skirt hides lumps and bumps without the need of Spanx. There’s nothing worse than going out for a couple drinks and dinner and having to stop early because your knickers are too tight to digest your food!

This River Island dress is no exception, the flattering shape gives the illusion of a thin physic and the sleeves are a sneaky disguise for bingo wings. Who said the gym was essential for a fabulous figure? The dress is showered in sparkles but don’t worry, they’re sewn into the fabric. No need for the hoover. They provide a subtle shimmer so even if the sun isn’t shining, you will be.

These belts are a bargain £6 for a pack of 2. Both the belts go well with the ice-cream shade trend. There’s a nude one for the preppy princess and a pink one for the kooky queens out there. I’ve teamed this with some nude shoes so the attention is on the dress but this outfit would work just as well with some pastel yellow or green wedges.

If you have pale skin like me I’m sure you’ll agree that finding a matching foundation can be a mission; I have yet to find many that don’t colour my face orange or give me a ghostly glow. In the past, I have tried everything. I even had a period where I decided to embrace my pasty ‘radiance’ by drenching my face in pure white Stargazer foundation. Then I saw the light. Literally. I went to a night club where the staircase was surrounded in UV lighting. The neon lights made anything white absolutely luminous. This gave most clubbers a quick giggle at their glowing pearly whites or their white bra strap gleaming in the light. Not me. My whole face blazed a horrific shade of neon purple. To make matters worse, my freckles didn’t glow. I looked like a spotty clown that needed a good wash. Not a good look. I chucked the foundation away the following day and sprinted to my closest tanning aisle.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not ashamed of my ashen skin, I just struggle to create an ‘ice maiden’ sheen without actually resembling a snowman. One problem I have faced with pale foundations in the past is that they don’t tend to give good coverage as there is not much colour in them. My latest trial was Clinique rednesssolutions foundation in Alabaster 01. I was excited to test this product as it claims to camouflage redness and I have to say, it hasn’t failed me. The beige colouring gives my skin a brighter and even complexion. I do have to be careful with the amount I grace my skin with as I have been spotted with some darker lines around my face. I toned this down with Maxfactor facefinity foundation inporcelain 01. This gave my face a smoother finish and removed shine and blended the edges of my face into my hair line and neck. These two products make a brilliant double act and give my face a fabulous finish.

As I mentioned above, I’m quite fond of the night scene but such a hobby doesn’t come without its consequences. Eye baggage. A neon light isn’t necessary to make these noticeable. Keeping my pale palette in mind, I purchased the ultimate pale princess Nicola Roberts Dainty Doll concealer pen in 003. I found this pen quite watery and the pale colour didn’t give decent coverage until I had applied a couple layers. This pen did however leave my skin exceptionally smooth and blended in very well. If you don’t have dark circles under your eyes and just want to add some luminosity to your eyes then this product is for you.

To give my skin texture a natural sheen, I used Dainty Doll Wonderbalm in 001 Working Girl. This oily balm contains natural ingredients such as beeswax and mango seed oil to ensure no nasty breakouts. The product has a sweet smell to it which isn’t overly girlie so be warned; your boyfriend might be on the grabs! 

That's a Wrap

Nail Rock nail wraps - £6.65

Chipped nails have become my forte, not through choice, but through sheer negligence .I always aim to make myself finger fabulous but who has the time to polish their nails every night? Whilst strolling though Boots, Nail Rock nail wraps captured my eye with the tag line: ‘lasts up to 10 days’. Perfect.


I scurried home and began my nails transformation by using a nail polish remover to ensure the wraps last to their full extent. The next task at hand was preparing my nails with the buffer provided. This reminded me of the pre- acrylic nails buffing process (without the fear of an over excited beautician eroding my whole nail).In the packaging there is an acetone wipe, which again, ensures the wraps last as long as possible. Be warned; this smell is not for weak nostrils. I did this outside as I feared I might be spaced out by the time I got round to actually applying the wraps.


The wrap itself is simply a sticker. I placed the square shaped edge against my cuticles and stretched it across my whole nail. The wrap was twice as long as my nails, and silly me thought I would leave all the stickers until all 10 were in their polka dot outfits and neaten them up at the end.


Bad idea.


When I had reached my second hand, my finger tips were gluing themselves together and I found myself in a miniature war for finger freedom. When I had broken free, I grabbed the nail buffer provided and buffed the excess wrap from my nail. I expected an arm work out but this was really easy to do. This took no longer than one minute for each nail. I struggled at first to ensure the edge of my nail was smooth but after the first nail I felt like a pro and I blasted my way through the rest.


There is a thin, wooden stick included, resembling an overweight cocktail stick, which can be used for removing air bubbles. I decided this would be too fiddly, especially as there was only one air bubble in sight. I merely pressed my finger tip on the wrap and glided it over the surface to flatten it out.


I have been sporting these wraps for 10 days in counting and they are still on. They aren’t quite as neat as they were on day 1 granted, but they still look good in my opinion. They have begun to flake off at the edges, like a nail polish would but other than that I can’t find any complaints. These wraps have lasted twice as long as any nail polish and they have artistic designs which couldn't be achieved through many other means.
